What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease develops when bacteria accumulate in your mouth. The microbes will first gather on your teeth, and, if left untreated, will multiply and move to your gum line. At this point, you will develop gingivitis. Symptoms include mild gum inflammation, sensitivity, and sometimes, slight bleeding. Fortunately, we can treat gingivitis with a regular dental cleaning.

If you do not receive appropriate care, however, the bacteria will travel deeper into your gums. At this point, they will form pockets in the tissues. You could experience significant inflammation and bleeding, as well as gum recession and loose teeth.

Eventually the teeth may fall out, and your jawbone could begin to recede. This phase of the disease is known as periodontitis. Though there is no cure, appropriate periodontal care can keep periodontitis under control and prevent further damage.

The Importance of Routine Care

Our first priority is to protect your existing oral health. Therefore, routine exams and cleanings are a fundamental part of our practice. At your biannual visits, the hygienist will remove the bacteria, plaque, and tartar that cause gum disease.

Dr. Emalfarb will also look for the signs of gingivitis. We then perform appropriate treatment and discuss lifestyle changes you can make to improve your oral health. These steps will keep the condition from developing into full periodontitis.

Of course, it is also important that you take good care of your teeth and gums at home. Daily brushing and flossing are essential. Using antibacterial mouthwash can also be helpful, especially if you are at a higher risk for gum disease. Your diet also plays a major role in your oral health. You should eat sugar and other starches in moderation, since they are the main source of energy for oral bacteria.

The Treatment of Gum Disease

If you are already suffering from periodontitis, Dr. Emalfarb will typically recommend a deep cleaning. During this procedure, also known as scaling and root planing, we will carefully remove the pockets of bacteria from your gums. We will also level the rough places on your dental roots, where bacteria can easily gather.

Appropriate periodontal care can keep your smile healthy and attractive for years. At Lake View Dental Associates, we can help get your dental health back on track.

We work hard to make periodontal care a pleasant experience. We do not use a glaring overhead light, and you can relax with our comfortable neck pillows. Most importantly, we use gentle techniques, and your gums will be numb during the treatment. In addition, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, to keep patients calm and relaxed.
