Dental Implants

Dental Implants Are a Comfortable, Long-Lasting Solution

Dental implants are an excellent option for Chicago patients who are missing one or more teeth. Implants are small titanium posts surgically embedded into the jaw to replace tooth roots and support dental restorations like crowns and dentures. Dental implants offer the most secure and comfortable anchor for dental restorations. At Lake View Dental Associates, Dr. Scott Emalfarb can fit you with a custom, natural looking restoration. Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the gold standard tooth replacement treatment because they allow dentists to replicate the entire structure of the tooth, from root to crown. After a healing period, the posts integrate with the jawbone and soft tissues to provide a permanent and sturdy anchor for your dental restoration. With dental implant-supported restorations, you will notice:

  • That you can eat the foods you want
  • Improved speech
  • Improved dental function, including chewing and biting ability
  • A more youthful appearance
  • Enhanced quality of life
  • A boost in self-esteem

Bone Retention

In addition to providing excellent stability, dental implants offer significant benefits to oral health. When a patient loses a tooth, the surrounding bone and gum tissue no longer receive blood flow and nutrients. As a result, the jaw begins to deteriorate. This loss of bone mass can affect your facial structure and the fit of your dentures, and can even preclude you from being a good dental implant candidate. Dental implants, like natural tooth roots, stimulate the jaw when you bite and chew; this signals the body to send nutrients to the area, encouraging the regeneration of the jawbone.

Independent Support

Dental implants are self-supporting. In other words, they do not rely on other teeth, or on the gum ridges, to hold them in place. With a traditional bridge, healthy tooth structure is removed from the adjacent teeth to accommodate the dental crowns that secure the bridge in place. The adjacent teeth also bear the burden of supporting the bridge, which places undue pressure on them. With traditional dentures, the prosthetic rests on the bony ridges of the gums, which wears them down over time.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implant treatment is a two-step procedure. First, you will be referred to an oral surgeon who will implant the titanium post or posts within your jaw tissue. It will take approximately three to six months for the posts to fuse with the jawbone. In the meantime, they remain covered by gum tissue. Once the implants are stable, you will return to Dr. Emalfarb, who will uncover the implants with a second surgery. He will place an abutment on each implant, and then attach a fully customized crown, bridge, or denture to the implant abutments.
