Candidates for Veneers
Patients who are good candidates for porcelain veneers should have good basic oral health. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, these conditions need to be treated before Dr. Emalfarb can place your veneers. Typically, candidates for veneers have one or more of the following:
- Stains and discoloration
- Minor misalignment
- Misshapen teeth
- Worn enamel
To fully determine your candidacy for porcelain veneers, Dr. Emalfarb will evaluate your dental health and discuss your aesthetic goals with you in detail.
Preparing the Teeth for Veneers
Dr. Emalfarb uses minimal-prep veneers, which are the thinnest veneers available and require a smaller amount of enamel removal than traditional veneers. After your initial consultation, the veneers treatment process will require two visits to Dr. Emalfarb.
During your first appointment, Dr. Emalfarb will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. This creates room for the slight thickness of the veneer, and provides a roughened surface that will help bond the veneer to the tooth. For maximum comfort, you may choose to have complimentary nitrous oxide sedation administered during this step of the treatment process.
Next, Dr. Emalfarb will precisely measure your bite and take several impressions of your teeth. This information is sent to a lab, where technicians will craft beautiful veneers that fit properly and maintain your bite alignment. It will take about two weeks for fabrication of your custom veneers. In the meantime, you can wear temporary veneers. In addition, we can have a wax-up made so you can see how your veneers will look.
Bonding the Veneers
During the second appointment, your veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth. Dr. Emalfarb will apply a special etching solution to roughen the surface of the prepared tooth. Next, he will apply bonding cement to the veneer, and position it properly on the tooth. Dr. Emalfarb will then use a curing light to harden the cement, creating a permanent bond. As a final step, he will evaluate your bite and make any necessary fine adjustments. In one week, you will return to our office so Dr. Emalfarb can re-evaluate the fit, and make sure you are thoroughly satisfied with the color, shape, and appearance of your veneers.
Caring for Your Veneers
With proper care, your veneers can last for years. Simply brush and floss regularly, and avoid habits (such as biting your nails or chewing ice) that put undue pressure on your veneers. If you grind your teeth, Dr. Emalfarb may fit you with a night guard to protect your veneers from damage.
